11 beneficiaries moved into a San Diego Habitat for Humanity development in Carlsbad this week. Six families arrived in late 2009. The other five began to move in three weeks ago. The complex is made up of 1- and 2-bedroom units. It is wonderful to see this private charity helping out underprivileged San Diegans!
The condominiums were appraised at $260,000 to $280,000. Habitat for Humanity built the homes on land given to the organization by the city of Carlsbad. Donations, such as down payment grant assistance from California Bank & Trust, and volunteer workers make it possible for the homes to be sold to recipient families at affordable prices, said Shayna Hensley, family services coordinator of San Diego Habitat.
Families earn between $25,000 and $65,000 annually to qualify for Habitat homes and are selected based on need, willingness to participate through sweat equity on the project and an ability to repay the zero percent interest mortgage loan, said Hensley.
